Question for all you avid readers:

I enjoy reading and would like to do more, but between working and ThingFlinging I find that I haven't added a new book to my shelves in quite some time. I'm preparing to go on a long trip in the next week (HawaiiVery Happy ) that involves two 15hr flights (LayoversSad ) I figured this would be a perfect chance to grab a couple good novels and catch up on some great modern fiction that I may have missed. So, I was hoping that some of you would make recommendations for me for what I should try. Here's a few of the books on my shelves that are favs:

The Time Traveler's Wife - Audrey Niffenegger
Life of Pi
Shogun
Talisman/Black House
Dark Tower Series
Dark Rivers of the Heart (I last read this one almost 2 decades ago, but I remember liking it)
^put this in here for you Koontz fans Although, Koontz is hit or miss for me.
and anything by Philip K. Dick

Hmm, I guess I enjoy any fiction/drama that is written for adult audiences and has a little splash of sci-fi/fantasy/horror thrown in. I look forward to hearing what you all enjoy.Smile

I brought this topic over from another thread so here's the first and only reply before I moved it here:

Wow.. asking a bunch of readers to suggest books, I expect this thread is about to blow up..

I'll start it with 2 Koontz books since you mentioned him. He's very hit or miss for me.. but I think you'd really like Lightning and Strangers. They're both pretty old.

You also mentioned King. Most people that read his stuff have read everything already but I really like his short stories if you haven't read those.

I'll stop for now, because I'm sure you'll get lots of suggestions.

Well i was going to suggeste the Dark tower Serise but you already have that. One of my Favorite arthours is V. C. Andrews. She has done a lot of great books. If you take my suggestion when you buy make sure it is the first in a serise. There are like 12 diff. serise. But my all time fav is by Jean M. Auel. She has the earth Children Serise. It is five books so far and it is set in the ice age. I have had to get new ones cuz my old ones fell apart.Whistle

I LOVE the Kellermans...Faye and Jonathan. They write murder mystery books. Faye Kellermans character Peter Decker is a recently converted Orthodox Jew and some of the rituals she explains are quite interesting in addition to the main story of the books. I know these aren't quite the genre you read...but hey, branch out explore new worlds. For somethng light and funny, I recommend the Janet Evanovich Stephanie Plum books, start with One for the Money (she's up to 14 now). They make me Laughing and for me are hard to put down but if I do put them down they are easy to pick back up. Enjoy Hawaii...if you get to Maui, be sure to eat at Mamas' Fish House, it's the best! Oh and DON'T drive to Hana...It takes forever and there's not much in Hana to do or see, just buy the tee shirt and be done with it. If you do decide to drive to Hana, there are a couple of places that will rent you a dog to take with you for the day...really...it may be the most interesting part of the drive. Have a great time! All of J.D. Robb's 'In Death' series are great murder mysteries!

If you want to laugh..Sophie Kinsella's Shopahollics books are really funny...but her best by far in my opinion is "Can you keep a Secret" way too funny!

If you want to try some sci-fi. There are some classics that everyone should read. Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert A. Heinlein and The Foundation Series by Isaac Asimov (Wikipedia-Foundation Series). Both have parallels to society and are thought provoking and very well written.

Have you read Stephen King's new book "The Cell"? that is a good book. It's as close to Scifi as I like to get.
The Odd Thomas series by Dean Koontz...i think I saw you read those already though. I'd recommend "The Host" by Stephenie Meyers...but it's a bit girly, if you like love stories and sad stories, that is a good one. ummm...
If you want a hot and steamy vampire sex story....read the Anita Blake series by Laurell K Hamilton. There are 15 books now, the 16th coming out on Tuesday.
Duma Key by Stephen King was also FANTASTIC. GREAT book. It's a bit slow to start out though, but stick with it. It gets good half way through.

I just bought Duma Key, so that's good to hear. I also really liked Eyes of the Dragon which was a completely different genre for him, so a lot his fans don't like it. Granted I read it while I was in highschool, but I remember it being really good.

If we're gonna talk hot steamy sexy stories...Anne Rice rewrote the Sleeping Beauty fairy tale as a trilogy, writing as A. N. Roquelaure. Warning...these are not for the kiddies, or even for a lot of adults, lots of shall we say ..."different" scenarios. Google and read the wiki on them then decide.

I didn't care for Eyes of the dragon myself. But he is a very flexible writer. He's not all horror, which is what I like. Some books you'll like, others you'll hate. I didn't like the "Tom Gordon" book either.

If you end up getting this Melmo, it is NOT something you should read in public. I was given this by a friend (hah!) and made the mistake of starting to read it at a news stakeout...bad move on my part IYKWIM.Embarassed

I normally leave my books in my car and read them while I am waiting for the kids to come out of school. That way, noone can see what I'm reading!

Are you talking about that book "The Girl who Loved Tom Gordon"?

OH.....MY.....GOD! Since I listen to these books on the days I do my 2 hour commute to the office...I need something that will keep me awake..and this book...YIKES! After I think it was the 4th CD..four hours into the book..I pulled the plug..I just couldn't listen to it anymore! Between eating some sort of nuts and berries..and that damn tuna fish sandwich which should have been rancid after 2 hours I was about ready to jump out my car window!

By the way....in the beginning of the book..she took the LAST bite of her tuna sandwich..and halfway thru the book deeper into the woods..she pulled out that tuna sandwich to eat...again! HOW??

Now...to anyone that survived the book and made it to the last page...did she ever get out of the woods? Eh? And..most of all..what the hell was that book about anyway? Eh?
