Sorry, AVA. I don't think I still have the book I used when learning Maya, so I can't recommend it to you. But if you look around, you'll find very helpful books. I'm sure that B&N must have a few and Borders. Scared? Have you ever used Maya? Do you have any recommendations?

Hey JJ..I just looked up the books..and there's a whole mess of them! All look good! By any chance...is this an animation program too? From what the books look like..there's animations involved. If so..way cool! Now to choose ONE! Are these kind of programs always free??

Yep You can do animation in Maya as well as single images, of course. The version of Maya I pointed you to is a personal learning edition and I'm not sure what the limitations of the software are, but I do know that it's for non-commercial use only and that the commercial versions of Maya are quite expensive. I was actually really surprised that they had a non-trial free version, but I think it's great! Good luck with your 3D piciatures and animanations.

I'm sure that B&N must have a few and Borders. Scared? Have you ever used Maya? Do you have any recommendations? My all time favorite will always be Imagine, it was originally made for the Commodore Amiga, which is where I used it originally (On my Amiga 3000 which I think was what... 25Mhz?) They had a DOS and then Windows 3.11 version eventually which I migrated to late in the game. But the IBM versions died when the company died, I hear the Amiga version is still being maintained by another company now. After Imagine, my preference was 3D Studio Max which is now 3DS Max. It has been too long since I've fiddled with this stuff, perhaps it is time to pick that up again. I have never tried Maya but I will look at it. Ava, if you're anything like me, I tend to learn best by simply doing--so if it were me I'd look for a engaging tutorial (or two..or twenty) to follow on creating something, until you have the gist of it. A book obviously would be helpful no doubt, but that is just the way I learn best. In my opinion ANYTHING is okay so long as it isn't POVray. Some people could do impressive stuff with POVray, but oh my god the math! PS Ava, try googleing for Mandelbrot factal generators just to get your lips wet on fractals. A lot of the generators are designed to be pretty straight forward without asking too much math from you. I mean well the simple ones anyway!

I've always wanted to learn to do that...can I use my own pictures and animate them too? Sayyyyy.....a picture of....Lucy?? That would be way cool! scaredwitless wrote: My all time favorite will always be Imagine, it was originally made for the Commodore Amiga, which is where I used it originally (On my Amiga 3000 which I think was what... 25Mhz?) I mean well the simple ones anyway! OMG..the Commodore?? Talk about a blast from the past! We won't even talk about DOS! When I first started to work for this company our program was so archaic..actually...the updated version is still quite archaic! It's a simple little program to keep records...but then the hospital system I access here is so NOT user friendly and all information is kept of four different programs...it's crazy! So basically while I'm working here..I'm on 5 different programs at one time..oh..and of course you can't copy and paste anything at all! where was I going with this? hmph..not a clue..well anyway... Imagine...does this program exist anymore? And the 3Dmax..how about free downloads like the Maya one? I wouldn't mind playing with them all and get a feel to see which I like best. I would love to animate my logo for my store and make the Art Deco Angel spin and maybe with some light directed at it so when it spins it will shoot off a ray on a certain angle..ya know? I think I will see about finding one of the fractal generators..maybe there's a free download I can play with there too. Well..as long as I don't have to do too much math that is! Maybe once I get the hang of it..THEN I'll dive into the math! yikes! Oh and yes Scared...alot like you..I dive in without reading anything at all..forget instructions or rules...but of course YOU know this already! HA! Would you belive I made Phi Theda Kappa in college and never opened a book?? still not sure how it happened..but I did it without reading anything! Now of course..this doesn't mean I have my degree...I'm all my math's short of that! Some day I'll bite the bullet and do the math! Mathphobic! I also opened my two online stores and knew nothing about antiques or internet sales..I'm sure there's instructions on how somewhere but....I just did..and well...6 years later and still going strong! The bad thing is..it drives me crazy when people want me to sit and teach them how when I don't know how I did it myself..I just jumped in and did it! Learned as I went along. But otherwise with programs I just keep clicking around until I find what I'm looking for! It took a bit..but I actually just figured out how to do photoshop in the past few months while playing with images to post on this board! I don't have a manual for the stupid program..but I just kept clicking and playing and when I finally figured out how to cut out an image from one thing and put it somewhere else I was estatic! I think the Royal Court was my first or second attempt actually....and it was fun! so..what's POVray?

The doodles remind me of some of Dali's work. Very impressive. I'd vote for it.

My browser opened it with Quicktime. So maybe you have to have quicktime installed.
