I'm sure most people who got the Linksys NSLU2 in their LOMBIII have no use for it at all. Who really needs a mediocre "network storage link"? Well, here's something interesting about that NSLU2. It runs Linux! Yes, just like Linksys' WRT54G, the NSLU2 runs Linux and can give you a great number of options depending on what you'd like to use it for. A few examples: -Web server -Print server -NAS -Music server -PBX Here's the site: http://www.nslu2-linux.org/
I'm currently turning my NSLU2 into a print server, since the Wireless print server that I got with my LOMBIII didn't support my printer. I've already Unslung my NSLU2 and doubled it's speed (by removing a single SMD resistor on the board). Right now, I'm configuring CUPS for my printer, so I should have a working print server soon. This has to be THE best thing I've gotten from TF yet. It's simple to upgrade and completely silent! Thanks so much, TF! I'd have never bought something like this otherwise PS: If someone would like to trade theirs, I'm all for getting me a second one, so PM if you're interested The excruciating magnitude of your philosophical confabulations are simply too voluminous for the diminuity of my comprehension. 22

Everyone needs a slug! For reference here is the NSLU2 product thread on thingfling: NSLU2 Product ThreadI have more links from back in the day posted over there. If you are into tinkering this little guy is hours of entertainment for ya. And with a little work you can achieve some pretty useful (and reliable) things. Linux appliances are slowly taking over my household, I swear. Things I currently get a LINUX BASH prompt from: 2 x networked hacked DirecTV TiVos soon to be three), a WRT54GS, WRT54G, WRT54GL, Buffalo WHR-HP-G85, and a desktop linux box. Geek-o-licious, I know. But too fun. Hey if anyone still has a NSLU2 they want to trade.. PM me, I could rustle up a list of trade ables in return.

It may seem daunting at first but most of these links have tutorials that lay out what you really need to do. And since the slug is solid state it'd be hard to irrecoverably screw it up too. I mean you could during the flashing process, but you'd only be doing that once (to get to a third party hacked firmware) and not constantly, so your odds are pretty good to get through unscathed.

From what I've read, the only way to really mess these things up is by going in and modifying the hardware. Even if you do mess up while flashing, it's still easy to fix. Just reflash. If you somehow mess up the bootloader, then yes, you're nearing the point of no return. From there, you'll HAVE to do a hardware mod to get it to work. BUT, it's not easy to do so I wouldn't worry about it... Scared, what have you used your NSLU2 slug for so far? Scared, what have you used your NSLU2 slug for so far? It was corrupting the boot loader I was referring to mostly. I agree it isn't likely, unless you interrupt a flash, or suffer a power surge/outage at some critical moment. Never flash via wireless due to the unstable nature of wireless connections versus wired (though if you're a daredevil like me, you will do so anyway and regularly.. But I am willing to take the risk for myself. ) If you got one of these slugs and feel like playing but don't know much... just delve into the links, read the forum threads, and play! When you get something accomplished even if it took some head pounding, the sense of accomplishment is great! Tamashii, I actually no longer have a slug. I bought one from TF when they were up for regular sale, but ended up gifting it away to my sister who was in need of a simple NAS setup on her home network. I got a WRTSL54GS in my LadyFling shagging from a while back which was awesome, but ultimately I ended up selling it off because my favorite WRT line firmware didn't support the USB/storage side of it anyway (Tomato) and I really didn't want to go Thilbor's HyperWRT or DD-WRT. So I decided to one day pick up another slug, unfortunately i didn't buy that last LoMB (again anyone wish to trade theirs? PM me!) I have four Tomato routers in active use, the GS is gateway, the G is an access point, the GL is in my sunroom connected wireless WDS to the gateway, repeating the signal as well as acting as a wireless ethernet bridge for the hacked TiVo I just put out there, and THEN it further makes a WDS wireless connection to the Buffalo WHR-HP-G85 which I have out in the guest house way out in the back yard... It's nice, I have network access everywhere! (Not to mention Open VPN on the gateway router, so..) Now in truth I really don't need a slug, got aa file server running, and networked printers, etc. But.. want one bad! Have fun with your slug, keep us apprised with any other cool things you do with it--

Yes I would like to have another slug to play around with if anyone wants to trade just let me know. I am going to use mine to share files with my sister and her bf. Currently they live in a trailer behind my house. The trailer has an addition so I'm going to have a buffalo router in the addition connected through WDS to my router at my house. Once I get some free time and feel like doing it all. I would like to have one tho to try out some of these other things you can do w/ the slug.

You are welcome to enter this world with us but be warned...You will forever be surounded by small flashing lights...I can count 4 devices w/ flashing lights in my view with out turning my head right now. That doesnt count my keyboard, monitor, headphones, pc, and speakers. I must say that a good baseball bat is more satisfying than a toss.
