Eureka's a pretty good show. I practically live on the scifi channel when I do actually watch television. Thanks for the heads up Ava, though I've seen them all--I can never bring myself to rewatch something I've already seen until a few years go by when I've forgotten the details.

It's one of those shows you can just kick back with a cupa coffee and a pack of smokes (if you smoke that is) and relax and enjoy the day of total nothingness! ahhhh...the joys of doing absolutely NOTHING! Maybe Next Week I'll be able to do that...maybe. Meanwhile..I'm recording it for that special day!

No Tivo?? How can that be? If it weren't for Tivo I wouldn't get to watch anything. I have both seasons of Eureka on DVD, saving them for a rainy day. For mothers day I'm spoiling myself by watching the NCIS marathono I recorded a month ago.

It's all good. I call it a Tivo, but it's really from my cable company, part of the box. I think it's $9 a month. I stopped buying movies, and have the cabel companys "tivo" and netflix rentals. Netflix now has unlimited movies online with their subscptions. Most of the movies or TV shows that are online for subscribers are old, but some I haven't seen in years. Perfect for those nights I can't sleep.

Yeah...It's all Tivo..it's easier than saying DVR and then having someone ask.."whats that" and have to explain! TIVO! yeah! works for me! How IS that Netflix? How many do you rent at a time? and..how long does it take them to get a movie to you? Not that I have time to watch a movie..but curious. Hey..your DVR..when you record in HI-Def..does the sound cut on and off on you? I had that problem with Bright House...they never could fix it so I switched to Verizon Fios as soon as they layed the fiber optics in the area. Also..this one is wierd..when watching Hi-Def..I don't know if this happens when watching live TV or not since I watch EVERYTHING recorded when I get time..but has anyone ever seen just the voice muted but the background music is still there? This happens once in a while and lasts a few minutes..long enough for you to wonder.."what did they say?" and miss a whole conversation between the characters. It's the strangest thing..no voice but the background music is there so the sound isn't necessarilly cut out or completely muted..just the voices! This happened with both Bright House and now Fios..I'm wondering if HIgh-Def has something that separates the voice and music (added separately) and one gets cut without the other. debspurpledragon wrote:SEE..I told ya'll not to freak out!!
I'm not 'tech' savvy, so I wouldn't know WHAT to buy or how to use it!!
I usually buy the latest movies that come out on DVD every 2 weeks eh..we're not freaking..just kinda surprised! It's like when you meet someone who doesn't like Ice Cream..there's that initial shock but we get over it.

Hi AVA, I enjoy Netflix. They are pretty quick to respond. Turnaround time in my neck of the woods is two days-three days (including my return to them). You can start with 1 at-a-time (2 a month) for $4.99; Up to 2 rentals a month - up to 1 movie out at a time with 2 hours of time to watch instantly for a flat monthly fee of $4.99 or 1 per month (unlimited -as fast as you watch and mail back, is as fast as you receive the next one) for $8.99/mo up to having 8 movies per month (unlimited) for about $48.00/mo. I also like the fact that you can save upcoming movies in your Saved DVD Queue and they roll over into your regular queue upon release date. They just charge your CC each month based upon the plan you choose. We are at the 5 per month. The only downside is that now "there's nothing on Cable" since we've seen it already!

I will be happy to help with Tivo - not the cable company's DVR because I don't have it - but with Tivo. Have had one for the last 4 years and now we have 4! Totally worth the extra expense as we don't Netflix and only rarely rent from Blockbuster and never Pay-per-view. The multiples are frequently recording when we're not home and/or during the middle of the night. Really helps with daughter's World Cultures extra credit projects - they have to watch shows on History Channel and Discovery that are relevant to the current topic and report on them. AVA -- So glad I saw the note on SciFi in time to catch the last one - which is the one ep that Tivo messed up on with bad cable reception and I missed last season. So I'm caught up until the new season! Thanks!

If I find something I want to watch when I'm at work, I just buy or rent and download it to the TIVO at home. Since I'm one of those people who sometimes has an absent mind, it helps that I don't have to remember the name of a show until I get home, or get a chance to go to the video store. And the really great thing about renting, is I don't have to take the movie back!!! Yeah, no more late fees!!! I can't ask for anything more. Good gosh, I sound like a freaking commercial!! I think I need to talk to tivo about getting paid........

Ava, how do you have your sound system hooked up? Is it straight from the TV speakers or do you have a speaker system hooked to a sound receiver box which is further connected to the DVR? Just wondering--if you had that problem on both your old box and the new one, it might actually be your setup or sound decoder (I'm thinking you probably use the digital out? either a coax or optical cable from the DVR to the sound receiver?) Just guessing. PS when you get that problem turn on the closed captions!

PS when you get that problem turn on the closed captions! Ok...in that room it's ummmm...I dunno! Lemme think here! I'll get back to you on that..but I'm thinking I have everything running into the DVR and then the DVR into the TV w/ the HDMI. The speaker system is running to the receiver which is to the DVR..but this happens when I'm not using the stereo. It's the strangest thing...background music..no voices for a few minutes..it only happens once in a while and only on Hi-def channels. Not using a coax..using component though. Did any of that make sense?? But I'm thinking it's the network and how they are creating the Hi-Def. no? I would think if it's my set up..all sound would be gone..not just voices but all music and background noise is there. OH! closed Caption! Why didn't I think of that!? Thanks! Maybe it was just too simple of a solution for me to comprehend..you know..everything has to be difficult or it's not right!

Well Ava don't quote me on this because I am no audio buff.. don't even keep an audio system I just use the TV speakers. Course my ears are merely decorational anyway, so.. But -ahem- I think that you are probably correct, the audio might be layered on certain tracks, and for some reason the voice track is being dropped occassionally. The reason I wondered about your sound system is that if you have one, the general norm would be that it'd be a digital line. Like HDMI to TV which yes carries video and audio, but if you're using a receiver to decode you also run a seperarte digital line from the dvr to sound receiver, which is usually either optic or coax.. So maybe your receiver is failing to decode the audio track during certain times? I would bet it only happens during certain programs like movies maybe? Or maybe! I don't know what I'm talking about, not an expert on audio systems. Try to pay attention to anything that different incidents of the problem have in common, maybe you'll discern a pattern and that'll give you an idea of what needs to be fixed (if it isn't just the nature of the system)

Yeah..I only use the surround sound when I'm playing a movie..otherwise just plain TV in surround sound kind of annoys me. Ya know...Seinfeld is just not meant to be played in surround sound! Oye..laugh tracks in surround! It's just not right! I'm actually thinking it's a certain channel in Hi-Def that does this for some reason. Of course since I watch everything recorded..I have no clue what channel I'm watching..I'll have to pay attention next time. Also..I don't know if this is happening on live TV when it's recorded this way either..but I'm thinking it must be or all sound would be cut off if it was the DVR. What's running from the DVR to the receiver must be optic..it's definately not coax...I think it's a single wire like the RCA cables in a way but only one..and then the colored ones for sound. Does that sound right? At least that's how I had it hooked up when I had Brighthouse..but when they installed FIOS..they installed all the wires for me this time...so I assume they just followed suit. OH..not movies..but regular TV shows (I'm lucky to get the 30 minutes to watch an hour TV show FFWD thru commercials..some day I think I might take the time for a movie)...I'm really thinking it's in the Hi-def..and possibly only recorded? It only happens once in a while..not often..I think twice since I've had FIOS and a few times when I was with Brighthouse..and I'm seriously thinking it's the same channel. hmmmm I'm really going to have to start paying attention to when and what channel this happens on. I wonder if I can find a pattern. could be interresting. Watch it never happen again now that I've finally mentioned this! Welp..since Hi-Def is fairly new...I'm sure there's bugs they need to work out still.
