psst... look at the newer reviews in amazon.... they seem to love the NLSU2 and most of the reviews are fairly recent.

there is only one thing of value - the battery charger. and this has been on TF before, if I'm not mistaken. This was supposed to be left over mb stuff - and the original mb was to have items that had not been seen before.

.. the mp3 armband can be found in any the dollar store

the linksys storage connector isn't worth anything - This is 4 year old technology that requires a network for connectivity, which is definitely not something that most folks have at home. This can't even be used as a usb hub (which only costs about $10)

btw ... cnet reviewed it on way back on: 08/13/2004! Even then it was not well thought of .. it insists on formatting any drive connected to it and it is 'as slow as molasses and is a poor solution. Not something I would ever buy - even for a buck or two. Here's the review if you care to read it:

http://reviews.cnet.com/network-storage/linksys-nslu2-network-storage/4505-3382_7-30733762.html

NEXT ..

... the backpack is screaming purple and will never see the light of day -- even my 3 year old daughter thought it was ugly.

... cd wallet and photo album that I got in a mystery box before -- ugly thing (even if it has cats on it)

... 2 window alarms that you get for free in the mail as promotions by alarm companies.

... a hand held shower nozzle that you see for about $10 at CVS (will never replace my shower massage)

... the beer can turkey thing .. may be useful but would never pay more than a buck for it.

THIS IS WHAT I GOT FOR $60 ????????

What a disgrace ... so now I've spent $60 on 6 MB's that totally sucked and everyone agrees were not worth anything ..... and now I give TF another chance to prove to me their business is here to stay and they want to satisfy their customers.

You know what they say -- fool me once - shame on you --- fool me twice -- shame on me ... I'm DEEPLY ASHAMED.

ThingFling ... YOU BLEW IT BIG TIME ... I GAVE YOU A CHANCE TO 'MAKE UP' FOR THE MB FIASCO and you just pissed it away.

The Linksys NSLU2 Network storage link. Affectionately known as The Slug. For those of you who are not nerds, stop reading. This is easily sellable for 40-50 bucks(it is 80 on amazon). If you are a little techy, you can attach a USB harddrive to it and have a NAS set up on the cheap. Note, that when you attach the USB drive, this will want to reformat the drive for use by the Slug. This means you will loose all your data. For those of you that are nerds, this is quite the gem. This is essentially a low power computer with an embedded linux OS. There are is a very active development community dedicated to this piece of hardware.
www.nslu2-linux.org
There are a lot of possibilities for this little machine.

I would say that all in all I am happy with my mystery box. I'm not sure I'll have the time to dedicate to the possibilities of the Slug, but I'm enjoying just considering it.

I have 2 NSLU2's purchased from TF way back, wish I got in on this MB, but was away on a business trip.
A heads up, THE NSLU2 Does Not reformat a drive and will work with NTFS formatted drives. This device also has a lot of 'other' uses. You can hook a usb printer to it, It can be a mail server, a web server and a bunch of other things. Basically it is a (extremely) small linux server

I use one of mine for NAS and have had no issues with it. I really like the fact that ftp to it is extremely fast.

Thanks for posting that excellent link tatagatha.

I was under the impression that it would want to format the drive using Ext3. But, it looks like you are correct; newer versions of the firmware can handle NTFS partitions. If I had looked at the bold lettering on the box... I would have seen this Whistle I hadn't checked out the possibilities of USB printers, but I'll take your word for it.

Man, the more I think about it, the more I might have to make this into something. It looks like an iTunes music server would be a good start:

and how much did the shower massager you already have cost? Was it effectively free like this one was?

don't let the door hit you on the way out....

I totally agree pryan67 .... I'm beginning to think these people that are trashing TF and not purchasing anything are sent and paid by the competition to do this..I'm guessing the competition is getting nervous that a better DOD site is coming up the ranks and will soon bump them off the top! Like this one say's....they're trying to "save us from buying crap" why would they care if a bunch of people that they don't know buy what they deem as crap? Apparently a Self-appointed authority on quality! And you're right! They'd complain even if they received a flat panel TV and say it's crap..even though they probably couldn't afford to buy even the crappiest one retail anyway!

We shall call them......WOOT-MOLES!

My dad is 81 and going through chemotherapy treatments. The chemo treatments make him hot. Of course, he can't drag a big ole' fan into the infusion room with him. When I received a couple of TF fans from some generous TF'ers who didn't want theirs (I was never lucky enough to get one in an MB), dad was thrilled when I gave them to him. He takes one with him to every treatment, and it is the perfect size in which to sit there and fan his face. All the nurses and other patients LOVE the fan. So, what may be crap to you is a lifesaver for others....

On another note, I guess some people are just never happy. I have to admit that the $9.99MB was not great; however, I certainly don't think that all of this TF bashing is warranted. The Royal Court has been great for me and always responded to my concerns and I've felt their customer service was and is excellent. THAT is why I come back.

No you are just posting to waste space.
You apparently dont buy anything here but do like to run your mouth a bunch.
The majority of people purchasing here totally disagree with you about TF being bad and I am one of them.

Are you kidding? With the exception of one person, it seems that everyone who has received their mb has been happy this time. I would agree that TF missed the boat with the $9.99 x3 MB's, but I had a feeling that they would make it up to us with this one. And it looks like they really have! I can't wait to get mine tomorrow!

Thank you - yes, it's a tough ordeal to watch someone go through. Unfortunately, there is no cure for his type of cancer, but hopefully, we can at least manage to get it under control so he will have a few more years left on earth...

Mine's supposed to be here tomorrow too! I can't wait!!! Drool Mine's the typical 10 pounder and that one looks pretty nice too from what everyone else is getting..definately worth the $60+ more!

Again I ask..why is that person so concerned whether we buy crap or not...why do they feel the need to "save" us as they state in their post? Are they on some sort of a mission? Eh?

Another question...if these people think TF is so bad and feel they should save the world from "crap" why are they hanging around on these boards DAILY and posting here? Don't they have anywhere else to be? They think the other DOD sites are so much better..why not stay there and away from where they apparently don't want to buy from anyway? It doesn't make any sense at all. If I don't like a store or what they sell..I just don't go there..I definately don't make it a "hang out" as my daily routine and bash the place..I just wouldn't give it my time.

I wonder if these people stand outside the entrance to the parking lot of Wal-mart and warn everyone that there is no parking and they'll have to wait a half hour on line to check out and they should shop somewhere else...just to save them from a day of hell! I myself hate Walmart..but I certainly don't hang around there and warn a crowd of people I don't know from Adam that once they enter the "black hole" of Walmart...they can call it a day because they'll never get out before sunset! I myself, have better things to do! I guess these people don't since they are here DAILY posting their neg comments to "warn" us and "save" us from our apparent demise in THEIR eyes!! Eh?

I guess it takes all kinds! Rolling Eyes
