Received mine today by regular USPS.
My only complaint about this device is that if I set the volume level to say, 30 and then if switch of the thing, it resets back to 20.
Anybody know how to avoid that behavior.

I got mine today. One works, one doesn't. At first, my computer wouldn't detect it, but the back light came on. After 15-20 minutes, it would detect and show up, but couldn't load any music onto it. The device description is different between the working and non-working players. I've already written an email to Siren's support. Hopefully, since it is showing up on my comp, it can be flashed into working order.

So, if anyone else is having the detection problem, leave it connected for a while. It probably still won't work, but it might be helpful when contacting Siren's tech support.

Got my players today - here's a list of my thoughts:
both work; both have music pre-loaded on them; both look lightly used (can tell they're not brand new, they have some fingerprint smudges, but nothing major); Windows Explorer recognizes them as a DVD drive (?) and will not accept drag-and-drop files (maybe that will change after I put some batteries in them); different drivers in each (updated one, now am waiting to reboot to see what, if anything, changes).

I guess I will check back in with updates (if anybody cares Razz).
Fling0: AMB XXVIII ($39.00)
Fling1: Monster Cable Digital Battery Charger w 4AA 1850mAh batteries ($9.00 after 10% off coupon)
Fling2: 2 Siren 4Gb MP3 Players ($39.99)
Fling3: 2x Monster High Capacity Pro Charger ($3.33 each)
Fling4: 12 Super-Bright 9 LED Flashlights ($13.98 )
Fling5: 12 Super-Bright 9 LED Flashlights - LAST TIME SALE ($13.98 )
Fling6: AMB XL (Power Squid) ($12.59)

It's not particularly silly, is it? I mean, the right leg isn't silly at all and the left leg merely does a forward aerial half turn every alternate step.

Got a reply from Siren's support just a few hours later:
Quote:
Thank you for contacting Siren Audio. Please go to “Menu” and see if you have “Settings” as an option. There were two different versions of software placed on the 4GB players. One version gives you a choice of changing it to MTP or MSC, and then the other one is just MTP. If you do have “Settings” in your “Menu”, then please select it and go to “USB”. Once you select “USB”, you will see “Auto Detect” and “MSC”. Please select MSC, and this should correct your issue. If you have the MTP device (the one without the option to change to MSC), then we can email you the firmware update to flash the firmware.

Even though my menu had those options, this didn't help me, but since it's the next step, I thought I would post it in case anyone else is having the same problem. If it works for someone else, great. If not, they can say they've already attempted it. Once I get the firmware file, I'll post my results here.

UPDATE: I tried tech's instructions again and got it to work. I probably overlooked a step. Another warning, if yours has the same problem. When you leave it connected for 15-20 minutes to get the computer to recognize it, you can't get to the menu while the USB cable is still attacted. Detach it, then it will display "Please Wait. Rebuilding the Library" for about 10 more minutes, then it will report "No files". You have to wait until then to access the menu and get to the settings. Since the waits are so long for the computer to detect, then the library rebuilding, I just want to tell you to be patient.

Not the one that isn't working, for me. The other one works great, either drag and drop or syncing with WMP.

Mailman came and left... nothing. Wow 17 days and still no product.
I'm still miffed that these were not represented as used or refurb.
This also makes it sound like a NEW package: Model: SIREN-4GB-2PACK

Be careful hooking these to your PC, if they are indeed used. Many viruses target external drives, which is how these show up in explorer. You can make a USB flash drive auto run programs, by tricking the system into seeing it as a CD or DVD drive. That is how external drives that use the U3 system "trick" windows into running the U3 programs when the thumb drive is inserted. A virus could do this also to maliciously load it's code.
I'm not saying you have one, but I deal with cleaning viruses on about 4000 PC's at work. You'd be surprised what they can do.

Here is the deal, TWO 4 Gigabytes MP3 Players.

I got mine yesterday they were combined shipped with the dual cross pens i ordered on a different day, which is okay as this is good for the environment. They are definitely used players as they came loaded with music, I did run into a couple of problems with them however. One has a cracked faceplate, about where the screen is and the other turns off on its own, it seems to have a faulty power button as the button is very loose. I can probably live with the cracked faceplate if I have to, but the other one shutting itself off is really annoying, I'll try using the trouble ticket system and see what thingfling is willing to do.

Just to let you guys know, I did end up getting both my players to work, no thanks to the siren tech support (they emailed me some kind of desktop application for updating firmware on USB devices that 1) wouldn't work because my player wasn't recognized as a USB device and 2) hasn't worked even after I got XP to recognize it as a USB drive).

One of my players would do drag and drop using kimota's method of changing the USB settings, but the other one I just installed a different driver on my box and now it works - no firmware update neccessary.

Here are a list of the steps I used to install a usable driver:
1.) Connect the Siren 4GB MP3 Player to the computer via the USB cable
2.) Open Device Manager (Control Panel->System->Hardware->Device Manager)
3.) Find the device in the list
4.) Right-click the device and select 'Properties'
5.) Under the tab 'Driver' choose 'Update Driver...'
6.) Select 'No, not this time' and click 'Next >'
7.) Select 'Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)' and click 'Next >'
8.) Select "Don't search. I will choose the driver to install." and click 'Next >'
9) Select 'USB Device' and click 'Next >'
10.) Click 'Finish'

Driver details:
Siren MP3 Player USB Device
Driver Provider: Microsoft
Driver Date: 7/1/2001
Driver Version: 5.1.2535.0
Digital Signer: Microsoft Windows Publisher

Also, I ordered some batteries from all-battery.com on Friday and they showed up today while my charger order from ThingFling (also on Friday) is still 'Processing'. Maybe we need to get the Royal Court some Red-Bull?

Also, I have one player with a bunch of music on it that doesn't show up in either Windows Explorer or Windows Media Player but will play on the player - any ideas?

I am kind of in the same boat (as viviandjw), except I want to keep (at least some of) the music that came on mine. Anybody have an idea about how I could go about finding music on the players that doesn't show up in Windows?

With this player, can you load any new music on it? If so, do those files show up? Just a theory Think , if you can see some files but not others, maybe the pre-loaded songs are in a hidden file format. In Windows Explorer, go to Tools>Folder Options. Then, go to the View tab. There will be an option for Hidden Files and Folders to view the files. If you're already set to view hidden files, then we're back to square one. If not, apply the change and see if that helps.

Thanks for the advice. I am able to see some of the music that came on the player (they all happen to be mp3 files...I don't know if that makes any difference). I did try showing hidden/system files and no other files showed up, so I don't know what else I can do. I have considered booting up Knoppix or Bart's and see if Linux can see what files are there, and I have also considered running a file recovery program on the mp3 player to see if it can pick any more files up, but just haven't gotten around to trying either of those things yet. I was really hoping that someone would go "I have done this before! All you have to do is..." and then my problem would be solved, but I guess not.

I had to send one of our two back as well and prefer to get a replacement as I had already given this to my 14 year old daughter as a birthday present when we then found out that it didn't function properly. (It kept boot erroriing and shutting down most every time we turned it on. When we could keep it staying on, no matter which computer in the house we tried - all with different operating systems - it would not load any music onto it.) My son is very happy with the other one though.

I purchase the 2 4GB SIREN players a few weeks ago. One of them worked fine, the other one's power button was broken, so I sent it back. Today a 2GB ILO player arrived. While I appreciate getting a replacement, I'm not very happy with the fact that it is half the capacity, especially seeing they have the 4GB SIREN back on sale this very moment. They clearly have them in stock- so why send me an inferior product replacement?
