But, my dad LOVES music, especially jazz, and I think this might be a great gift for his birthday in August. However, he is 81 and is starting to suffer from confusion and senility at times. If I were to purchase this for him (and keep one for a gift for someone else) do you think it would be easy for him to operate? He has a PC and used to get on the internet all the time, but he doesn't do that much anymore - however, I could install a bunch of music for him. I just need to know if it will be easy for him to figure out how to operate the thing. He has always been a gadget junkie, and he LOVES radios, so this would be right up his ally as long as it's very, very simple to use. Any thoughts????? Thank you.........
Speaking strictly from my ilo experience (the button design is exactly the same) I don't think it would be much of a problem. The volume button is self explanatory, just a + and - button. The music control buttons are self explanatory too and easy to understand; an arrow for forward, double arrow for fast forward, 2 lines for pause and double backwards arrow for rewind. There is a lock button which would prevent someone from accidentally hitting another button and changing the songs, which might be the only confusing thing to him. But if he is a gadget junkie I don't think it should be a problem at all. It's a very easy MP3 player to operate. My 5 year old can do it.

I have the 2 MP version of this player. It look exactly the same. It's ok, it gets the job done, sorta like a broom. I use media player to sync it. It takes one AAA, it really doesn't last very long if you turn the volume up. Maybe 5-6 hours, 8 if you're lucky. There is no where to put a SD card to upgrade, so in this case, 4 MP is what you get. Mine will use the aux cable to plug into the car, but it's tinny and AM radio like.
Seriously, I'm underwhelmed by it. I bought myself a Sansa and put kids music on this for my 3 year old. It does lock and it can take a beating.

Well, if I didn't already have about 10 different mp3 players already, that's not a bad price for a toss-around 4GB one.

It's not particularly silly, is it? I mean, the right leg isn't silly at all and the left leg merely does a forward aerial half turn every alternate step.

@eagle-eye I don't think that is the tech drawing for this device (although I could be wrong). Reasons: Diagram shows Bluetooth, battery charger (neither of which this player has) and a 3.3 V lead for a hard drive (which may be used by the flash memory, idk). Caveat Emptor. Caveat Emptor. I'll try and find the page again but this does use the sigma tel 3600 chip. I seen the BT and charger as well but just because it is on the block diagram does not mean that they are in use. EDIT: here it is http://www.digitaleditor...wPage.aspx?page=06300602

havspace wrote:It's probably both Mac Compatible and requiring Windows Media Player. According to the manual you only need Windows Media Player if you want to play DRM songs (or, music management software from providers "might" work) . I've seen a few places say it is NOT compatible with iTunes, but you can download Windows Media Player for Mac: http://www.microsoft.com...player/mac/default.aspx
I kind of doubt you have to rip with WMP to see the info ... it's probably just rather picky about the tags whereas other software or players might be better at "guessing" or displaying info included in the file name, but then I haven't used it and don't know much about ID2/ID3 tags. I have seen three reviews so far which are pretty explicit about needing to rip with WMP to be able to see the tags. Now I'm sure they haven't tried EVERY CD ripper out there, but the fact that it won't read ID3 information at all, and won't read ID2 information for files ripped from iTunes, is enough to sour it for a lot of Mac users right there. If, like me, you have an extensive library of NON-DRM music, ripped by iTunes and containing ID3 tags, your choices seem to be reripping the music, retagging the music, or settling for not having access to the tag information. The latter is the only viable choice for most folks, and the degree to which not having ID2 tag information is an issue is a matter of personal preference. Some folks won't care. Find way to get him an ipod touch. It would be perfect for somebody who may have confusion or senility. It has icons that he touches to get to his music. It can be setup to use photos of his album covers. Should be super easy for him to use. Plus if he is near a wireless hotspot, he can jump on the Internet like he used to. Since your dad's a gadget junkie, I bet he would love one. Yeah, it's more pricier than this closeout deal...but I'm sure it will make him happy every time he uses it, plus it will make you feel good too. If the price is an issue, just skip a few mystery boxes and flings...for your dad's happiness. Make it a combined father's day and birthday present! Thank you for this info - and thanks to everyone else that also replied. I will keep all these comments in mind. Since the ipod is pricier, I can probably get my sister to go in 1/2 with me on the cost. Sadly, the more complicated a gadget was, the more he loved it because of the challenge - but not anymore. He can barely work his cell phone, and I got him a very easy to operate Virgin Mobile phone. Old age is a real "B"!!!!
