Anyone know why ThingFling would charge my credit card on the 23rd of May, the sale date, then not provide any other information?

I have tried contacting them by email and by trouble ticket, but there has been a surprisingly complete lack of response.

I sincerely hope that this is not indicative of the typical standards of this company. Would any of you be able to shed some light on this situation?

Computir...check your spam email folder..although some emails never make it to me either..some ISP's block emails before they even make it to your spam folder..if you don't find it in your spam folder..click on the MY FLINGS link at the top of any page here and it will bring you to your orders so you can see the progress of your order and once shipped, you can click TRACK and see the expected date of arrival. Also..go back to the submit a ticket section and put your ticket number in there to view your ticket and see what's there..I think you can update the ticket also in case it got lost out there somewhere. THEN..there is also some sort of email option somewhere in there...you want to check off the receive emails box...can't remember exactly where..but it's in your profile somewhere.

AND NOW...a question or four about this phone.....

I have a house phone and a cell phone..what is different about this type of phone? I see these seem to be popular but why would I talk over the internet? Is something better about this?? Last time I attempted this was back in the Dial Up days and pre-unlimited Long distance and the connection was choppy. Have things changed since then?

Also...does anyone already have one of these...Can this be hooked up to a regular phone jack?? I saw somewhere back on one of the previous pages that you can..but want to be sure..and how is the sound quality on both ends?

AND....does it have a headphone jack and belt clip??

Double AND....I see it say's expandable...where do you get the extra hand sets for this..anyone know??

If all of the above apply...I would love to have a few of these and would order them next time they come up! Very Happy

This runs through skype, which is a service that you can use to talk over the internet. Calls to major destinations around the world from skype to a "real" phone are around 2.1 cents per minute or I think for around $10 a month you can get a plan to call anywhere in the US. If you're calling a landline or cell phone with your skype phone, there are some savings but the savings really add up if you're calling someone else that also has skype because then the call is completely free.

This means if you have a friend who also has this phone or a headset/microphone, then they can call you via skype and you can use the handset to answer it like a regular call.

As long as you have broadband, the call quality should be fine.

I have this phone, it has 2 modes, regular phone and IP phone. Note that the computer that you hook the base station to must be turned on and running skype for the skype function to work. When you dial, the default is the regular phone line but you can press the skype button and it switches to skype.

The sound quality is pretty good, I use to to call Canada quite often and my cell reception at home is mediocre.

I think it has a headphone jack, but I don't think it has a belt clip. I'll have to check later.

Extra headsets are probably available on ebay, but the company is out of business.

Ok, been using two of these since the last time (or the time before) these came around. Believe it or not, we're actually using VoIP and VoIP for the meantime, and getting decent results, though getting a landline to replace MagicJack as our primary phone service as MJ is still a bit flaky.

The idea is, plug the base unit into a phone jack, and you have a VERY good cordless phone. These are the new DECT 6.0 standard which won't interfere with wireless networks, and calls are very clear.. none of that buzzing, or faint radio reception, etc. in the background. DECT 6.0 phones without the dual mode generally cost a LOT more than what TF is offering this unit for.

But, take the USB port on the base unit, plug it into your PC (Win2k/XP only, not Vista) install the software/Skype and you can make VoIP calls to other Skype users anywhere around the world for free. The handset is nicer than most PC headsets which tether you to your computer. Yes, there is a standard headset jack on the handset, but headset/beltclip isn't included. I bought a headset/beltclip set at Best Buy for my DH for about $25 I believe, and it works just fine.

Now, if you really want to take advantage of VoIP. Then cancel any long distance service plan you may have with your local telephone company. You'll probably end up with AT&T's no monthly fee basic LD package with all LD minutes at $0.20 each or something. But then sign up for "Skype " for $2.95 a month or 2.1 cents a minute depending on how much LD calling you typically make. Then just use the "Skype Out" button on the phone and you've got cheap long distance with quality nearly as good as POTS (Plain old telephone service) and much better than most cell phones.

Now as to why I bought a third phone: I only use one base unit. AUVI is long out of business, but they've still got a slick website up (www.auviworld.com) where you could theoretically order expansion handsets (PHIP651) for $50 each. But after going through the manual, finding things not matching precisely as described and doing a little experimenting, I found I could get both handsets (from my first order of two full systems) to work with one base unit. Essentially get to the "Advanced Set - Registration" Press "Ok" then press and hold the button on the base unit until you hear the chirp on the handset. The unit supports up to 4 handsets, and our daughter is moving back in with us for a while, so we're getting another handset for her as well.

Bottom line on the downside, the phone isn't the most intuitive I've used -- The menus are somewhat clunky. And if you want to use Skype, then you'll need to keep it attached to a PC with XP which must be turned on to make the Skype call. And finally you're dealing with orphan products from a company that went belly up. But on the positive, it's a very affordable high-quality cordless phone that will handle any landline calls you need to make without a fuss. (PC not requred) Plus it uses 2 standard NiMH rechargable AAA batteries. So you'll never have to worry about finding replacement batteries when that time comes.

Thanks for the kind words, Eagle-Eye. Dancing
AVA's questions lent themselves nicely to providing a narrative of my own experience with the product. Unfortunately, by the time I posted it, TF had already moved onto the next item. Embarassed

Any ideas if this works with in-bound calls from Skype? i.e. will the phone just ring if I have an incoming call through that service? Basically, I'm looking to replace my regular land-line with this type of setup: this VOIP phone, a SkypeOut account and a SkypeIn number.

I purchased two of these last time it came around and set it up this past weekend. The phone will ring with incomming Skype calls. It allows a different ring tone for the incomming calls. (Can be set to the same if needed.) Not bad for $$$. Also unlimited US long distance is only $3/month.
