I received an email on 06/12/2009 stating mine had been shipped. I've been tracking it and it now says it was received on 06/19/2009 for mailing. No clue when I'll actually get these things. Sad

Hopefully my hot flashes will abate until I get them! Evil or Very Mad

The fan is tiny and inside, it is not to blow on you, but to dissipate the heat from the peltier device [one side of the metal is cold, the other is hot, reverses by reversing the power applied.] if you listen real close, you can hear it.

As someone else stated, the fan doesn't blow on you and you can barely barely hear it when it's on. If you hold it in the light, looking at the back side, turn it on....you will see the fan start.

I did have problems with one of the two I received but finally got it working. The issue was with the battery compartment. The batteries fit really loosely and I had to pry out the contacts a little bit to get connection. Also one of the batteries just fits in there oddly. I did finally get it working properly but I thought for a little while that one of my two was a dud.

I too am one of those women reaching hot flash age (early, I'm only 38!) and will find this very relieving. I have coworkers that are as well and plan on gifting them with one of these each. (I placed 2 more orders last night.) Use flashers lol gotta stick together. And anything that relieves it is a godsend!

The two I ordered came in yesterday. I bought them for my wife. I put batteries in one and gave it to her to check out. She was amazed at how cold the thing got. It is perfect for when she gets hot.

She likes them so much she had me order two more today for her mother and sister.

I got my first 2 the other day and they work great. I was hoping that it might show up again on for sale so I could get more. I just ordered another 2 so that I can give my brother some relief since he tends to sweat ALOT. Eh?

Just ordered one. hope it will help out at dialysis when the rest of the patients are too cold and I have to endure warmer temp settings. Portable Fans are a little too large to place on the side trays of the chairs.

Question, even with the switch in cold mode, half of the unit does still get hot, right??

If it is peltier, I would imagine it would work that way.

How do you think it's supposed to work? Be careful in thinking it's supposed to be a fan and BLOW at you--that's not the case at all. The business end of this device is the blue disc. It will heat or cool depending which way you switch, and you TOUCH it to your skin.

The other side is a VENT. It does contain a small minimalistic fan, but it is only there to exhaust. To answer someone elses question, YES, the exhaust is always opposite of which way you switch. When the blue disc is nice and chilly, the other side, the exhaust, gets pretty hot. And vice versa when you switch it to heat.

I have new observations for this device now that I have my new devices. It seems to get chillier depending on the ambient temperature differenial. IE if you switch it on outside on a hot summers day t will get very cold. If you switch it on in an already chilly air conditioned environment, it will not. And I think that explains why gottanobakka only got 60 degree temps in his test.

My other observation is.. THESE can indeed get ice cold! the key I find is to switch in on A) in a hot environment and b) put it down for 4ish minutes first before you use it, to let it chill. C) somewhat fresh batteries. Using those parameters I often experience the condensation on the blue disc someone else mentioned, which right there tells you how cold it can get. True it doesn't maintain the temp long when holding it to your skin, but rinse and repeat works.

If anyone makes headway with discerning what's needed for the AC adapter for these, be sure to post. I mean aside from the obvious that it'd need to be 4.8-6v. These would be KILLER with a wall source. I find I have to recharge my batteries pretty much daily if I use it throught the day regularly.

I just got mine yesterday. No wonder it was free, you get what you pay for, except I'm out $6 for shipping. It works, just not very well. The instructions recommend 1800mAH NiMH AA batteries, and claims to cool up to 40°F below ambient temp.

I charged up four 2600mAH batteries and put them in. I waited 30 seconds like the instructions say and touched it. It was slightly cool to the touch, so I placed it on my forehead but after a couple of seconds it was warm again.

I got out my IR thermometer to do some tests. I took a reading every minute or so, and after half an hour it managed to get 30°F below the temp in my room It may do the 40°F it claims, but I don't feel like waiting that long.

Finally I rubbed it on my face and it felt good, for about 10 seconds, and then the disk was warm again. Sad

Then there's the fan. It pulls air in from the bottom and blows it out the sides, so when you're pressing it on your skin, you feel a cool spot in the middle but you still feel the exhaust heat around the sides.

I had a car wreck several years ago, and due to some nerve damage, my body's internal thermometer is broken. I no longer sweat when I get hot, so cooling off is very hard. I was really hoping this would work, but so far nothing beats a cheap spray bottle you can get for a $1 at Wal-Mart.

Pretty weird... I've made over thirty purchases here, and nothing arrived broken, even Mystery Box items. I've got 4 of theses coolers, all are working just fine. Found a 5v 2.3 amp wall adapter (powered USB hub), that fits and works. Left sitting, it gets condensation on the blue disk. Doesn't get cold enough to make ice though. Haven't had a day off work in two weeks, but plan on taking on a part soon, and seeing if I can make any changes.

Basically, I take what I get off these sites, it's a gamble, and don't expect perfection, as I usually do some experimenting and re-purposing... You really can't expect the same service as a walk in store, you have to pay the return shipping. It's your choice, and the rest of us shouldn't be expected to pick up the tab, with higher prices. I believe these are $15 or so at the store, where you can take it back and get a new one, or get a refund, you paid $6, less then half price, even if you pay return shipping, you saved a few bucks.

I've never had to try out customer service here, but don't think it'll be all that bad. This is one of the better sites, it works by keeping operating costs low, which they pass on to the customers, instead of adding it to profits, like most people do. I doubt most of this stuff is fresh from the factory, but has been sitting in a warehouse, store shelves, or customer returns, so broken/missing items can be expected more than in a walk in store. Fortunately, I haven't gotten any yet, but have plenty of Super-glue just in case. The profit is in volume, can't expect the staff to open, examine, test each item before shipping. The added time and cost would kill the deal. I prefer to save some money, and gambling is always fun. Don't bet more than you can afford to lose.

They're back again! I don't think I need any more.... already have four from the last two times they've been on, but they do work pretty well.

They'll run off alkaline batteries, but you'll want rechargeables as they go through 'em pretty fast.

Ahhh.. thanks! I wondered about that jack; it isn't mentioned in the instructions. I'm guessing it's center positive, no? Have you tried the adapter with rechargeable batteries in the UBKool to see if they'll charge in the unit via the adaptor? That'd be, um, cool.

Got mine a few days ago. I had ordered two and gave one to my GF who suffers from migraines. She thought it was very thoughtful of me and made her smile when it got nicely chilly. It *really* made her smile when it got hot, too, so she could ease a sore muscle in her neck. Best $6 I've spent for awhile!!

Battery cover is VERY flimsy and poorly designed but when it fails . . . well, we both like the look of duct tape!Applause

I got two of these a couple months ago when they posted them previously. They definitely work, the blue disc gets probably about 30 - 40 degrees cooler than room temp. Have not measured it, but once turned on and given 30 secs or so, the entire blue part will become around 40 degrees in a 75 degree room. It also heats, although I bought it mostly for sun and entertainment.

I use NIHM rechargeable batteries - the drain is pretty quick, but batteries last at least two hours between charges. There is a port on one side that will accommodate a charger/power adapter if you can find one. The hole is much smaller than most chargers - sort of a "mini-mini" plug type. I'm sure there is a tech name for the plug, I just don't know it. Have been trying to find out where to get the adapter - probably would be 5.5 to 6.0 volts in order to charge the NIMH AA batteries (remember, NIMH voltage charged is 1.2 volt vs. 1.5 for a normal alkaline or carbon cell). Anyone know where to get the proper adapter? I have not tried Radio Shack - don't like opening my wallet that much if I can avoid it.

These will never replace A/C - consider them a fun toy. Tom

PS: As others have said, the plastic battery cover is very weak - has not broken so far but every time I open it I can not believe how cheap that part is. Batteries almost have to be forced in place - not the best battery holder. Maybe that's why the company that makes these is struggling at best. The new ones do use 6 batteries instead of the 4 these do. All in all, consider it a fun "techie type" toy.

Haven't messed with them since, first weekend off work since end of June (damn Florida Cigarette tax increase). Will look into it later today, but wouldn't count on it. The instructions do suggest rechargeable batteries though... Probably don't need 2.3 amps, it was just the first on I found that fits. Didn't figure the polarity would be a huge issue, the hot and cold would be reversed, but yes, center positive.
