Control your house with a touch of a button Speaking freewire is easy. There are just a few words that we use to describe important parts of the freewire system. You'll want to understand these words - they'll make it even easier to set up and talk about freewire. The first one is The MESSENGER HUB - the brain of the freewire system. When it is plugged into an AC outlet it has the ability to receive Radio Frequency (RF) signals from the remotes and the ability to send messages through your home's existing wiring to all receivers that are set to the same house code. It can also be used to control incandescent lamps rated up to 500 watts, (Plugged into the bottom of the Messenger Hub). The second one is The UNIT CODE which allows you to assign a number (1-16) to any freewire unit in your home system. We do have The HOUSE CODE that prevents interference with other freewire systems that may be in your neighborhood. When you set your House Code to a letter (A - P) you are choosing a distinct communication language between all parts of your freewire system. It is essential that all units in your freewire system be set to the same House Code letter for it to operate correctly. We also have the SYNCHRONIZATION. When you first install your freewire units it is essential that you match up the wireless transmitters. This will synchronize their wireless communication in a distinct way that prevents interference with other freewire systems. The COLOR SEGMENTS on the Unit Code wheels that are six colors (or Zones) help you to designate Unit Codes to various parts of your house. GROUPS are shortcut buttons to operating any combination of up to four receiver Unit Codes and the HOUSE button - When you press HOUSE ON all the Lamp Receivers and the Messenger Hub in your freewire system will turn on (for safety reasons, it will not turn on appliance receivers). When you press HOUSE OFF everything in your freewire system will turn off - this is the fastest way to turn off all your freewire units. Check more information and common questions HERE. The Black & Decker 5 piece starter kit that you are going to purchase right now is a five piece kit that allows you to control the all indoor devices of your home with a touch of a button. The first piece is the Messenger Hub, the brain of the Freewire system, has the ability to receive Radio Frequency, as we explained before, from the remotes and the ability to send messages through existing house wiring to all receivers that are dialed to the same house code. The second and third pieces are TWO Lamp Receivers that allows you to control your lights from across the room or the other side of the house. There's the Indoor Remote and Key Chain Remote which controls lighting, small electronics and more from the palm of your hand. Turn off your downstairs lights from the comfort of your bed, turn on your coffee pot and get your morning started at the touch of a button or press one button to create the perfect setting to watch a movie or entertain. Ah I remember the good ol' dot com days when you used to be able to get multiple sets of these from x10 for free.... They had some pretty cool universal remotes and the light switch replacements were neat as well. Don't you hate pants?

TF Crew: Do you have other accessories (Outdoor Lamp Receiver, Bulb Receiver, Appliance Receiver) for this that you will be listing? I would like to get this, but If I do, I would want some of these extra accessories at TF prices! Does your kids' school have a Circle of Friends? Circle of Friends is a social mentoring program based in schools pairing students with special needs with their regular education peers. It will change your kid's life in a positive way! Go to: www.buildingthecircle.org to learn more. What is Y.E.S.S.? I've bought three of these, two for me and one for my friend for his birthday. I also have two of the kids that include "outdoor" modules (one for each of us.)
They work great! There are a couple of annoyances, such as the loud "click" the master module makes whenever you use it and that half of your plus are likely out of phase with the other half, meaning you need two master modules to cover your entire residence... but the range on the remotes is impressive. My 17 month old son LOVES to turn the lights on and off, so it keeps him entertained to boot!
And yes, my Christmas Tree WILL be on one (actually two) of the modules this year so I can turn it on and off with the remote!

Great kit, though the lamp modules don't work for me, even if plugged into the same outlet (so it's clearly not a wiring issue!). Yes, I checked and rechecked the house code and channel numbers. Still a good kit though, since other modules are available elsewhere.

This kit is a bargain at the regular price, let alone the TF price. I already have 3 installed around my house (yes, I have a lot of automated light switches...) and I'm tempted to plonk down the $20 to have a spare "just in case". The outlet controllers alone are worth the price of entry, as is the keychain remote.
In case anybody is wondering about compatibility or additional modules, the switches are all X10 compatible so you can get tons of additional control from sites like Smarthome.com -- and while you're there, check out what a bargain this kit is compared to other brands of X10...
For those confused about compatibility it's actually pretty simple: -- The outlet controllers are all X10 standard, so you can control them from any X10 control pad. That alone is worth the $20, even if you never use the remotes. -- The plug-in controller sends X10 commands, so it will control other X10 devices such as light switches, security, etc. -- The only part that is proprietary is the wireless comms between the remotes and the plug-in controller. In other words, you can't use another brand of remote to talk to the Freewire receiver, or the Freewire remote to talk to another brand of X10 wireless receiver. -- You can even use the Freewire remote on the same system as a conventional X10 controller without problems. For example, I have one desktop X10 controller that can do anything in my house, and one of these babies permanently wall-mounted to replace a bank of light switches that were inconveniently positioned.
The only downside is that B&D doesn't seem to be making these kits anymore (so get them while you can!) although it does continue to offer a line of compatible wireless security modules under the Freewire brand.

Probably too late for me to get a reply, but maybe these will be posted again later. Is the picture really representative of the kit - two messenger hubs? I saw a previous comment regarding using two messenger hubs if your plugs are out of phase. I have that problem. Can I put two messenger hubs in and control both from the same remote? Thanks! EDIT - Never mind - I read the description more closely. There are two lamp receivers. The picture, however, does show two messenger hubs, so it's a bit confusing. My question on using two hubs still stands. Will that work? The list was getting too long to continue to provide details: 25 flings flung - 14 of them mysteries - $477.69 total damage
