Just remember this is Bluetooth 1.2. Even though it is backwards compatible with 1.1, Wikipedia does not say that 2.0 is backwards compatible with 1.2.

1.2 is supposed to be able to transfer @ 721 kb/s. Certainly fast enough for USB 1.1 which transmits up to 12Mb/s. This is similar to a cheap DSL connection. So, if you are counting using it for lots of file transfers, you will have to wait a bit.

Hey, what's going on here. At 7AM EST the Nano covers had three hours left. Now at 9:30 AM EST the bluetooth device is alreayd showing as a past item. How do they expect people to purchase stuff they want if they don't hold their time lines.

I don't understand why they keep show the same items with long times (like the cool downz for 15 hours) and then the new items like this pop up and then are past items super fast.

It's a bluetooth dongle. A 1.2 Bluetooth dongle. While it has good profile support, it's not the greatest deal. You see these on other DOD sites, even places like meritline and buy.com (for about the same price). FYI, after research, it looks like this might come with BlueSoleil software. This is not bad (I use it myself), but it can be buggy. The Widdcomm (Broadcom) drivers seem to work better for many.

Also, for those of you that are unused to the world of bluetooth, you need two bluetooth-enabled devices to talk to each other. This dongle will serve as one end of that communication, but you need something else with bluetooth to talk to. It's like the telephone - with 1 telephone you can make a call, but if your friend doesn't have one too, you're out of luck.

Many phones, PDAs, laptops, etc. have bluetooth built-in, so you might be able to talk to them, but it can be tricky. I like bluetooth a lot, and I have a lot of experience working with computers, but I still had some problems with some of my bluetooth devices - getting it set up and talking right, etc. It can take a lot of fiddling and the software, drivers, and profile support all make a difference. Do your homework before you buy something, because not all bluetooth devices play together well. See what bluetooth devices you have and see what profiles they support. Profiles are designed for specific functions - for instance, if I have a bluetooth phone w/ built-in MP3 player, but it doesn't support the data transfer profile, only the headset profile, I can't transfer files to my PC from it. So not only do you need bluetooth on both ends, you need to have the profile supported on both ends for a given function to work.

There's actually another thing you can buy that goes with this...it's a home stereo receiver thing to make your stereo bluetooth enabled to receive the signal..I got it here with this thing a while back..it was sold as a combo as well as separately..they might do it again.

I haven't had any time to hook it all up yet..but it's supposed to send my music files over to my stereo in another room..some day I'll get it up and running. No huge rush though since I already have another stereo system hooked up to the computer! I would love one of these that does video also...anyone know if such a thing exists that would work with this thing? That would definately get me moving on hooking it all up! Since I already have a bluetooth keyboard and mouse I can run my computer from another room on that TV! That would be kinda cool!

AVA - the profile for video is VDP, and it doesn't look like this supports it. It also doesn't look like much does. There is a box by MSI that supports streaming audio/video from bluetooth-enabled source like cellphone or even laptop, but the thing about bluetooth is it's not meant to go far, the effective range on these things is about 30 feet. Some devices say more, but my experience is that it's iffy, also it's not great through walls. If you're not going far, it might work. A better bet would be something that works on WiFi. There are several sites that talk about these. You can buy them or make them out of old computers, Wiis or XBoxes (and probably a lot more). Here's a decent one from a good media hardware company.

video is a bandwidth pig. bluetooth, esp. 1.1 just doesn't have enough. Just to transfer a photo takes about 15-30 secs. last I remember.

to JimmyDaGeek-- about 2.0 backward compatibility, I believe that's not a problem. The limiting factor would be the 1.1 speed and distance, and compatible software.

My cell phone is BT 1.1 (I think they all are) and my pc lappie dongle is 2.0 EDR (extended data rate=faster transfer, but still slower than USB 1.1) Class 1 (theoretic distance=100 ft).

They transfer fine. Also Mac Book Pro built-in BT works great with my cell phone.
